Day 17: Friday Dance Party

This is one of my favorite pictures.  Most of the grab-and-grin head shots I have don't get at the me that I really want to be.  This one does.  A friend at the Nebraska Writing Project snapped it on a writing marathon stop at Heron Bay, a bizarre Bicyclist/Biker Bar outside of Springfield, Nebraska.  Something about the place's quirkiness and it's big outdoor stage begged for air guitar, and in turn we all found ourselves giggling.

A truly important moment in my life.

I say that jokingly and seriously all at once.  When we choose silly in the moments that just might drown us in their seriousness, we live grace, we inhabit gratitude.  It's one of the reasons I married Ralph (#1 on my list of thanks), his ability to always make people laugh when we get to taking things too seriously.  He's been pure grace in more moments than I could ever deserve.  My favorite poem, "Go to the Limits of Your Longing," by Rilke has a line that nails it:

Nearby is the country they call life.
You will know it by its seriousness.

I think Rilke is challenging us to dare differently, to do our best, but also just PLAY in this life we've been given.  Yes, there are times for thoughtfulness, and yes, sometimes a life experience has deeper meaning, but other times--as much as I hate this phrase--it just is what it is.  Joanna Macy says, "But this moment you're alive, so you can just dial up the magic of that at any time."  So, it's Friday, why not turn up the volume and have a dance party?

Day 17 Challenge:
  • Find time to have a dance party, even if it's just a little shimmy in your car on the way to work.  Here's an eclectic mix of songs that bring me a sense of gratitude:
"The Thanksgiving Song" by Adam Sandler
"What a Wonderful World" by Louis Armstrong
"Blessings" by Laura Story
"Praise You In This Storm" by Casting Crowns
"Thankful" by Kelly Clarkson
"Thank You" by Dido
"Gratitude" by Earth Wind and Fire
"It's a Great Day to be Alive" by Travis Tritt
